What Will You Learn In Massage School?

Blog

Massages can restore the body and mind. They can soothe sore muscles and ease away stress. Anyone can give an amateur back rub, but true massage is a skill that takes time to master. A massage school will impart the knowledge you need to succeed in the field of massage. It will also give you the opportunity to practice your skills on real people, under the watchful eye of massage instructors. Here are four things you can learn in massage school.

1. Anatomy

As a massage therapist, you will spend the majority of your day in close contact with the human body. To work effectively, you need to understand the human body. You must know where each muscle is located, how it's connected to other body parts, and what function it fulfills. Understanding anatomy will help you treat each patient safely without causing unintended harm. Massage school will teach you anatomy through classroom lessons and hands-on activities.

2. Practical Application

Massage is a physical practice. Understanding the theory behind massage therapy is not enough on its own. You also need to learn to put that theory into practice. Practical studies are a large part of massage school. You will practice massage techniques on yourself and fellow students, initially. Once you have gained experience, you will have the chance to practice on volunteer clients.

3. Specialties

Some massage therapists choose to specialize in particular styles of massage. For instance, clinical massage utilizes different techniques than Swedish massage. Clinical massage is geared toward health and recovery, rather than relaxation. No style of massage is superior to any other. They are all valid practices with their own applications. In massage school, you will have the opportunity to direct your learning path. You can choose to focus on certain parts of the body or certain techniques that you find interesting.

4. Hygiene and Sanitization Protocols

As a massage therapist, you will be handling people's bodies all day. People place their trust in you, and you must honor that trust. Maintaining proper hygiene and sanitization is one way you can keep your clients safe. Cleanliness is more important than ever, now that the coronavirus pandemic is a concern.

In massage school, you will learn the proper technique for washing your hands. You will learn to wash your hands before and after seeing each client. You will also be instructed on the proper cleaning supplies to use to sanitize your massage table and draping sheets between clients.

beauty school -- creating a plan for the future

I made a deal with my daughter that she could continue living at home after high school without paying rent if she did something to improve her life. About two months before she graduated from high school, she came to me and told me that she figured out what she wanted to do with her life -- she wanted to go to beauty school and become a beautician. My daughter and I created this blog together to help others that don't have a plan for their futures find a way to improve the outlook and begin making a plan that will lead them to good jobs that they love.
